Ode to a Unicorn

The dragon raised his weary head
and looked around his empty nest.
Since deaths dark hand had claimed poor Red
each day and night he'd known no rest.

Five score and more of years had passed
since Blue began his fruitless task.
To find a love that would at last
release the grip of this death mask.

O'er endless seas and dusty plains
the search continued night and day,
to find the one to stop the pains
and make the hunger go away.

And then one night he heard a cry,
and slowly from within his lair
to search the sky with tearful eye
the dragon rose, but did not dare.

His eyes revealed a wondrous site
that made the fire in him ignite,
a wild thing of darkest night
had surely come for his delight.

He flew outside to greet the beast,
a creature with a single horn
with sparkling mane and flashing teeth
a gorgeous lady unicorn.

The hunters aim was straight and true,
and from the dark his arrow sped
and in the chest it struck poor Blue.
The dragon fell down as if dead.

The unicorn with haunting cry's,
flew down and landed on the ground.
She looked into the dragons eyes
and listened for the slightest sound.

No longer would the dragon roar
or search the night in silent flight.
As death began to close the door
he fought the pain with all his might.

The unicorn raised up his head
and pulled the arrow from his breast
and then when he was almost dead
she placed her horn upon his chest.

As the tears ran down her face
and mixed with blood within his veins
the dragons heart began to race
and slowly death released its chains

At night the people stand and stare
and point up to the sky above
when light and shadow fill the air
they tell of how they fell in love.
